Why Flint Exists

Flint may be about batteries today, but when it started, it wasn’t really about batteries. It was about something bigger—a desire to think differently, to ask questions about the world around us, and to challenge the way things have always been done.

No one woke up one day and decided, “Let’s revolutionize batteries!” It started with a question: “Why are the tools we depend on to power our lives so harmful to the planet?” Batteries weren’t an obvious focus at first, but they became impossible to ignore. They’re everywhere, powering the devices, tools, and systems we rely on every day. They’re the unsung heroes of innovation—and, unfortunately, some of the biggest contributors to waste and pollution.

That’s when we realized: batteries needed to be better.

It Was Never About Batteries

At Flint’s core, there has always been a belief that the best solutions don’t come from tweaking what exists—they come from questioning the entire system. Flint didn’t start with a box to think outside of; it started with a blank canvas and a lot of questions.

  • Why are the technologies that power our world so damaging to the planet?
  • Why do we rely on materials that exploit people and ecosystems?
  • Why do we keep choosing progress that comes with a price we can’t afford to pay?

There weren’t clear answers to these questions, but they were worth asking. Batteries weren’t part of the original plan, but as we explored, they became the obvious place to start.

Batteries power everything from phones to cars to sensors, yet their production and disposal come with immense costs. Flint set out to address this because it was clear: fixing batteries meant tackling a problem that sits at the heart of modern life.

It’s Also About More Than Batteries

At Flint, it has never been about following the conventional path. That road might be easier, but it often leads to conventional results. And the world doesn’t need more of the same.

So, we embraced the unconventional. We asked questions others weren’t asking:

  • Could a battery be made from something as simple and abundant as paper?
  • Could it be biodegradable without sacrificing performance?
  • Could we create something powerful and sustainable at the same time?

We didn’t just try to improve on existing designs. We questioned the very foundation of how batteries are made—from the materials used to the processes that bring them to life. The goal wasn’t to make small, incremental changes. It was to redefine what “better” could look like.

Why Flint Exists

Flint exists because the fight against climate change demands more than just small improvements—it demands bold ideas. It demands the courage to challenge assumptions and the patience to explore the unconventional.

This work isn’t easy. It’s messy, uncertain, and full of setbacks. But every failure teaches something valuable. Every small step forward reminds us why we do this: because it matters.

It matters that we’re building something aligned with the values of sustainability and responsibility. It matters that we’re proving technology can evolve without leaving the planet behind. And it matters that we’re part of a larger movement working toward a future that feels possible—and hopeful.

What Built Flint, Is Building Flint, and Will Continue to Build Flint

Flint wasn’t built on having all the answers. It was built on curiosity and the willingness to ask tough questions, even when the answers weren’t clear.

It wasn’t about batteries at first, and maybe it never will be just about batteries. It’s about rethinking how we create, how we innovate, and how we solve the problems that define our time.

That’s what built Flint.
It’s what is building Flint today.
And it’s what will continue to build Flint tomorrow.
